Captain Kathryn Janeway is most noted for commanding the USS Voyager and being the only female captain in the leading role of a Star Trek series.
In the first episode of Star Trek: Voyager ensign Harry Kim follows Starfleet tradition and calls Captain Janeway "sir." She politley tells him she prefers "captain" but that "ma'am" is also acceptable.
